At the Texas Neuromuscular Center patients are seen by Dr. McMichael. We perform electromyography and nerve conduction studies in the Center. Electrocardiograms are performed in the Center. We also perform spirometry testing to assess respiratory muscle function. Sleep studies are performed to assess for hypoventilation caused by respiratory muscle weakness. We prescribe and manage CPAP and bilevel CPAP systems for our patients. We work with a pulmonary specialist for patients who need noninvasive ventilators. We order genetic testing and refer patients for muscle biopsy when appropriate. Muscle biopsy specimens are generally sent to the neuropathology laboratory at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas for analysis.
